leonard chin, born in jamaica, started producing music with legends like augustus pablo or horace andy before he moved to london in 1975 and started his santic label. what more can i say reflect this typical 80 s uk soul production, a perfect glimpse of early brit-funk works combining soul, jazzy rhythms, lovers rock, midtempo beats. the song is mainly instrumental and includes sweet background vocals. this timeless hard to find tune finally has it s first time official reissue. here comes official reissue on pépite

the next installment in cold diamond & mink’s soul investigations introduces a three part harmony group from california. “my my my baby” is a smoking hot group harmony groover that should drop a few jaws at your next dj set. thee baby cuffs was born out of love for soul music and chicano culture. their first 45 “where did our pride go”, came out in 2017 on the raza del soul label, covering an unsung early 70’s larry saunders production. “my my my baby” continues on the same lane of midtempo soul over funky drums and soulful horn lines. the lyric is your middle of the road love song material, but the group harmony lifts it right off the ground like it’s meant to happen in this kind of music. get a few copies and rock the instrumental on the b-side before dropping the vocal, if you feel like it. soul music that’s this potent is better enjoyed in excess.

7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. in that spirit, get on down will be reissuing some of the most crucial jamaican sides on 45, staring with the maytals “monkey man.” recorded in 1969, the cut was a smash hit in jamaica and hit number 47 when released in the uk in early 1970. “monkey man” went on to be highly influential on the british two-tone movement of the later 70s with the specials offering up a ripping version of the cut on their 1979 debut. the b side, “night and day”, though not a chart-burner, is certainly one of the most solid rock-steady cuts you’ll ever encounter rife with bubbly keys, tight snares and toots hibbert’s incredibly soulful vocals.

one of the founding figures of the jamaican music industry, arthur duke reid produced many of the classics of the ska, rock steady and early reggae eras. and when, in the mid-1970s, dub music took hold, he was able to call upon one of the most talented soundmen in the business, errol brown. utilising some of reid’s most memorable rhythms, performed by the producer’s legendary session crew, tommy mccook & the supersonics, brown created some of the finest dub mixes of the period, a dozen of which were gathered on treasure dub vol. 1, one of the most acclaimed collections from the golden age of reggae.

following the success of the first treasure dub album, a second volume was hastily assembled. repeating the formula of the previous collection, the set featured 12 hard and heavy dub tracks that utilised some of duke reid’s most celebrated rock steady and reggae rhythms. as with volume 1, the musicianship from tommy mccook & the supersonics and mixing skills of ace treasure isle studio sound engineer, errol brown combined to create one of the finest dub lps of the mid-1970s.

skinny pelembe corrals together a cast of talented friends for his new ep. it’s his most ambitious release to date, boasting a different group or artist featuring on each of its tracks, each of them an act he’s met through music or through linking with brownswood’s celebrated talent development programme future bubblers two years ago. across its four entries, he bridges hip-hop, psych-rock and jazz-influenced tangents, cutting out a diverse cross-section of the city’s music scene. it’s a document of the connections he’s made as an artist, and is the most collaborative project he’s worked on so far. the title of the ep comes from some advice which skinny noted to himself on an old notebook. each of its songs started as a rough idea which was then fleshed out and re-imagined with his collaborators.

walter gibbons, a true master of the mix, a disco legend, a pioneer of dance music. theres literally very few who can lay claim to progressing the artform of studio mixing and technique than the late gibbons. his contribution to contemporary music cannot be understated, first as a dj where his drum laced experimentation captured the ears and minds of his peers and the dancers, then later as a mixer and studio genius where he continued on his quest. often fixated on the percussion and breaks within records his versions would often dive into spaced out, dubby and stripped back territory that very few of his peers were even contemplating at that time, fervently reconstructing the tracks themselves and often the time, space and dancefloor within which the record was being played. a true original, gibbons was behind many of the definitive versions of the classics, his unique style often catapulting records that were just fine in their original form into brand new colourful, cosmic interpretations that flourished sonically and rhythmically with brand new sounds that bristled with vision.

mrr: michael raymond russell / a connoisseur/collector of vintage drums/analog equipment and engineer/producer inspired by 1960’s/70’s underground music. mrr has been producing heavy drum break production inspired by psychedelic rock to heavy funk to electronic library records for more than 20 years. started from a sampler collecting vinyl to now creating a library record label drumetrics with production recorded on vintage equipment from vacuum tube equalizers/valve compressors/tape machines/tape echoes etc. paying back homage to sampled music for producers to utilize.

after making a promising start with their first installment, disco pocho return with a second round of expertly selected, sliced and segued groovers from the parties of yesteryear. javi frias is the cat on the buttons this time around, taking two loose and limber disco funk burners and giving them just the right subtle touch to set the place alight. its a shame has an easy tempo, but there s more than enough heat embedded in the looped up slices frias gets busy with it s a dense, rugged and rock-tinged sound that should please brass construction fans. on the flip, you got what i need turns things up with a powerful, diva-led gem that s heavy on the one, just like it should be.

originally released in 1992 and 1993 the nex ep and poundstretcher ep have become incredibly sought after on vinyl. however, the poundstretcher ep was always cut too low with 4 tracks aside. we are now taking both ep’s and remastering them to 3 loud pieces of vinyl.
